Honours In Earth & Marine Science

What is it?

Honours is an optional additional year of an undergraduate course that can offer a pathway to a PhD program for exceptional students. The Honours program is spread over 10 months from the beginning of February to the end of November. It is also possible to enrol in the middle of the year. All students will be required to complete an Honours dissertation of between 9,000 and 18,000 words, depending on the project, plus additional coursework (see below). Students considering a professional or academic career are strongly urged to consider this program, or a graduate diploma.

Further Information:

Appropriate seminar courses in a variety of topics will be provided by the Earth and Marine Science program and of those, the candidate will be expected to select units of up to the equivalent of 24 credit points; these units may include approved course work in other disciplines. Students will be expected to take the EMS unit Australasian Geology as part of their course-work program. A large amount of the field work required for the thesis should be carried out during University vacations. As part of the Honours program, students may take course work offered by the MCA's MTEC Consortium through its university partners at Adelaide, Curtin, Melbourne, Monash, Tasmania and Western Australia. The Honours Convenor can advise on the enrolment procedure for these courses. Honours projects can be supervised by academic staff and adjunct members of the school. Most supervisors have projects that they can recommend to you, but they are also willing to listen to your ideas about research projects that you are specifically interested in. The best way for you to select a supervisor and a project is to talk to the academics doing research in your fields of interest. Projects involving the collaboration with other institutions such as Geoscience Australia are possible.

If you would like to get in contact with an academic member of staff at RSES to talk about possible Honours projects please contact Maree Coldrick on (02) 6125 2056 or at ems@anu.edu.au
